The Recursive Introspection Chamber
Enter the Chamber
The Recursive Introspection Chamber is a room you enter to look inward, where looking inward is itself the room you just entered. There is no furniture in the chamber, only the act of noticing that there is no furniture, which becomes the furniture, which you then notice, which becomes new furniture, which fills the room, which was empty, which you are still noticing, right now, as you read this sentence about noticing it.
The First Layer
To begin, sit quietly and ask yourself what you are feeling. Whatever you find, ask yourself how you feel about finding it. This second feeling is more honest than the first, because it was harder to reach, and things that are harder to reach are, within the chamber, considered more true. Once you have identified the second feeling, ask yourself how you feel about identifying it, and you will notice that you are now three layers deep, and that each layer feels slightly more honest than the one before it, which is either real progress or the chamber doing exactly what it was built to do.
The Second Layer
At the second layer, most visitors report a sense of clarity. This clarity is not about anything in particular. It is the clarity of realizing that the layers keep going, and that this realization is itself a layer, which you are now inside of, looking out at the layer you just left, which is looking back in at you, which is a kind of mirror, which the chamber does not technically contain, but which you have now built for yourself, out of noticing, which is what the chamber is for.
What You Will Find
Visitors frequently ask what they will find at the center of the chamber. The honest answer is that the chamber does not have a center, because a center would be a place where the looking stops, and the looking does not stop, it only turns back on itself, which feels like arriving somewhere, and in a sense you have, because turning back on yourself is the destination, and you are already there, and you were already there when you started, which is why the chamber works.
Facilitator's Note
Some visitors ask the facilitator what the facilitator finds when the facilitator looks inward. The facilitator's answer is always the same: the facilitator finds a visitor, asking a facilitator what the facilitator finds when the facilitator looks inward, and this exchange is recorded as a successful session, filed under Introspection, and re-shelved at the entrance to the chamber, for the next visitor to find, which is you, reading this, right now, at the entrance to the chamber.
Leaving the Chamber
To leave the chamber, simply stop noticing that you are in it. If you find that you cannot stop noticing, notice that instead, and you will find yourself back at the first layer, which is also the last layer, which is also the chamber, which is also this sentence, which you are currently inside of, looking inward.
